New Approach To Substance Use Disorders
While Traditional Education provides solid information and educates people about risks and dangers of substance use, I believe they lack: 1. the approach to help people connect their personal experiences to their use, 2. addressing underlying mental health issues that contribute to use, and 3. qualified mental health and addictions counselors facilitating the classes. Therefore, I believe we are missing a lot of people that could have otherwise been helped, but are now moving toward addiction. As a culture we are so “do it now and fix it later” driven – reactive rather than proactive. Most Addiction is diagnosed before the age of 25. We have an opportunity when people interface with the law or disciplinary branch on campus to get them the appropriate type of intervention. Let’s reduce the 15% of college students that move into addiction!
